Five Ways to Keep Your Kids Happy at a Family Photo Shoot

Family photo shoots are meant to be fun, relaxed, and full of connection — not stressful or stiff! As a Busselton-based family photographer capturing families across Dunsborough, Margaret River, and the South West, I know that keeping little ones happy makes all the difference in creating natural, joy-filled images you’ll treasure for years to come.

Here are five simple ways to help your kids enjoy the experience and make the most of your photo session.

1. Let Them Be Themselves

The best photos happen when children can just be kids! Whether we’re shooting on the beach at Busselton Jetty, exploring Meelup Beach in Dunsborough, or chasing golden light among the Margaret River bush tracks, I love to let kids run, laugh, and play naturally. Those candid, in-between moments are always the ones that parents fall in love with most.

2. Choose the Right Time of Day

Timing is everything. Try to plan your photo session when your children are well-rested and happy — not during nap time or right before dinner. For outdoor sessions, the golden hour (just before sunset) gives that soft, glowing light that’s flattering for everyone and adds a touch of magic to your photos. The South West is spoiled for golden light — think of the glow along Old Dunsborough Foreshore or the soft pastels over Busselton Beach.

3. Bring Snacks and Comfort Items

Even the happiest kids can get a bit tired or hungry during a session. Bring along a few mess-free snacks, some water, and a comfort item like a favourite toy or blanket. Whether we’re photographing in the Margaret River vineyards or along Busselton’s sandy shores, these little comforts help keep kids calm, relaxed, and smiling.

4. Keep It Positive and Playful

Kids respond best when things stay light-hearted. Instead of asking them to “smile for the camera,” keep things fun — play a game, tickle them, or tell a silly joke. I love using prompts that spark genuine laughter, like “who can jump the highest on the beach?” or “whisper your silliest secret to Mum.” In places like Castle Rock, Canal Rocks, or Eagle Bay, these playful moments create pure, joy-filled images.

5. Trust Your Photographer

As your photographer, my goal is to capture your family’s connection just as it is — perfectly imperfect and full of love. Don’t stress if your kids aren’t sitting still or looking at the camera every second. Some of the most beautiful photos come from the in-between moments — the giggles, the cuddles, and those spontaneous bursts of joy. Trust that I’ll guide you through the session and make sure every detail is captured naturally.

Bonus Tip:

Make it a day out!

Plan something fun after your session — like ice cream at Busselton Foreshore, fish and chips by the Dunsborough beach, or a picnic under the trees in Margaret River. It keeps the experience light and gives the kids something to look forward to, turning your family photo shoot into a beautiful memory.

A family photo session should be about celebrating your family — the laughter, the connection, and all the love in between. With a little preparation and the right attitude, your session can be stress-free, memorable, and full of joy.
