A Beautiful Golden Hour Family Session at Cowaramup Bay

There’s something truly magical about Cowaramup Bay, and this family session with Emily, Joel, Boston, and Max was the perfect reminder of why I absolutely love photographing local families here in the South West. As a Margaret River photographer who spends countless afternoons chasing sunsets, this session ticked every box—golden light, genuine connection, and the rolling waves of Cowaramup Bay creating the perfect backdrop.

Golden Hour Magic at Cowaramup Bay

We timed this session perfectly for golden hour, that dreamy window of time just before sunset when everything feels softer, warmer, and more beautiful. That evening, the sky put on the most incredible show—rich golds blending into soft pinks and deep blues. It was one of those sunsets that reminds you why the South West is one of the most breathtaking places in Australia.

As the sun dipped lower, the whole bay lit up with a warm glow. The boys, Boston and Max, were in their element—running, laughing, exploring the sand and rocks. Their natural playfulness brought so much life to the images, and the golden light wrapped around them perfectly.

A Family Session With a Personal Touch

One of my favourite parts of this shoot was the family’s decision to bring along their beautiful dogs. Pets are such a big part of so many families, and including them always makes a session feel even more personal and meaningful. These two pups were gentle, playful, and completely stole the show in more than a few photos!

I always encourage families to bring the things—or the pets—that make them them. It turns a photo session into a story, not just a shoot.

As someone who lives and photographs families across Busselton, Margaret River, Cowaramup, Dunsborough, and the wider South West, these local sessions always feel extra special to me. There’s a sense of connection and familiarity that comes from shooting in places we all know and love.

Emily and Joel were relaxed, warm, and so connected with their boys. That genuine ease showed in every image—snuggles on the shoreline, playful moments on the sand, and quiet little in-between moments that often become the most meaningful photographs.

Cowaramup Bay is one of my favourite locations because it has everything—calm water, dramatic rocks, soft sand, and some of the best sunsets in the region. The colour, texture, and variety make it perfect for family photos, especially if you’re after warm, natural, lifestyle images that feel like you.

For this session, the combination of a calm evening, golden skies, and a family who truly let themselves enjoy the moment created absolute magic.
